Ianne Fields Stewart (she/they) | Director + Producer

Ianne Fields Stewart (she/they) is a black, queer, lesbian, and nonbinary transfeminine New York-based storyteller working at the intersection of theatre and activism. Their work spans across many fields including: theatre, film, dance, creative writing, arts administration, and social justice. She is dedicated to creating art, facilitating spaces, and influencing organizational practices that allow Black queer and trans people to radically luxuriate in our own joy. To put it simply, she wants to make their people feel good.

In April 2023, Ianne returned to the professional dance world when she was asked to join the ensemble of SLM Dances’ Purple: A Ritual in Nine Spells. This evening-length ritual choreopoem embodies the power of deep sisterhood for social change through storytelling and movement. Ianne performed the track of Caretaker to the People, and the work was performed for the month of June as a co-presentation with Gibney Center and Lincoln Center.

In the fall of 2023, Ianne became a company member with MOD Arts Dance Collective where she trained with the phenomenal Leah Tubbs who remains a mentor and teacher. For 8 months, Ianne trained with MOD Arts and performed in Nina Remixed as part of the Collective Thread Festival.

On May 10, 2024, A Complicated Woman (the musical Ianne has been the book writer for since 2018) premiered at Goodspeed Musicals. The musical was directed by Jeff Calhoun with Music and Lyrics by Jonathan Brielle and additional lyrics by Sam Salmond. The cast featured Tony Nominee L Morgan Lee, Nora Brigid Monahan, and an incredible ensemble of performers.

In July and August of 2024, Ianne co-presented the late Cecilia Gentili’s Red Ink. Working alongside Nic Cory, Breaking the Binary Theatre, Sara Ramirez, Rattlestick Theater, and Killer Films, Ianne created and co-faciliated with Flower Rios the talkback and performance series that accompanied the production. Ianne and Flower brought together such luminaries as Ceyenne Doroshow Devin-Norelle, Raquel Willis, Mila Jam, Arewa Basit, Jordyn, Jay, Giselle Kristina Byrd, and so many more. Ianne and Flower also built the front of house altar and photobooth all to give honor to the beloved Cecilia Gentili.

In the fall of 2024, Ianne made their Off-Broadway debut as Sara in Sarah Mantell’s In the Amazon Warehouse Parking Lot at Playwrights Horizon. Under the direction of Sivan Battat and in the company of such formidable actors as Sandra Caldwell, Pooya Mohseni, Deirdre Lovejoy, Donnetta Lavinia Grays, Barsha, Tulis McCall, and Adinah Alexander.
